What to look for when buying a watch? At FLARROW we find quality and an affordable price imporant. To help you choose we summed up some of the most important characteristics of a quality watch.
A watch movement formst the beating heart of any watch. There are many different types of movements. The two most common movements are a quartz and automatic movement. A quartz movement uses a battery as its power source as opposed to a automatic watch movement seen in more expensive brands. There are several renowned brands that produce quartz movements, such as Ronda and Miyota. At FLARROW we have decided to use a Swiss produced quartz movement made by Ronda. The Ronda Slimtech - Caliber 1063 movement used in our watches works best with the Sony / Murata 321 (SR616SW) battery.
More information and technical specifications on this movement can be found here.
When talking about a watch crystal we talk about the 'glass' cover of the watch. Generally speaking there are three types of chrystals: sapphire crystal, mineral crystal and plastic/ acrylic crystal. The cheapest and most commonly used 'glass' in affordable watches is mineral crystal. At FLARROW we are only looking to use the best materials available. That's why we have chosen to use sapphire crystal. Sapphire crystal is renowned for being shatterproof and scratch resistant and therefore more expensive than other crystals and widely used by luxury brands.
How to check if a watch has sapphire crystal?
Simply do the water drop test. If the water drop stays together on the crystal then you can be sure it is sapphire crystal.
Stainless steel can be divided into several grades. Commonly used stainless steel grades are 201 or 304L, which are however not of good enough quality to be used in watches. On the other hand, some luxury brands like Rolex, are renowned for using 904L grade stainless steel, which is has a superior resistance to rust, corrosion, and acids. At FLARROW we, like most watch brands, use 316L Stainless steel. 316L stainless steel is antimagnetic and has similar characteristics to 904L grade stainless steel but uses less chromium, molybdenum, nickel and copper.
The water resistance of a watch is very important, as water could damage the inner workings. The degree of water resistance is measured by 'ATM'. ATM is short for Atmospheres and indicates the pressure a watch can withstand when under water. For example a watch with 5 ATM can withstand 5 times the normal air pressure at sea level and is therefore water resistant to a depth of 50 meters (5x10m). Generally speaking, ATM ranges from 3 ATM for washing hands to 30ATM and up for diver's watches. FLARROW watches have 5ATM water resistance, which means the watches are perfectly resistant for daily exposure to rain or washing your hands. To keep the watch and straps as beautiful as when you first got it, we advise you to look after it carefully and not expose it to too much water.
At FLARROW we like to do things a little bit differently. That is why you will always get two straps with your purchase - a leather one and a mesh one. Our interchangeable straps are all equiped with quick-release pins so you can change the look of your watch in a matter of seconds. Use the mesh strep in the summer or if you are feeling a little bit more festive, and use the leather strap combined with other leather accessories or if you dress up for a more formal look. Just mix and match however you feel like!
Apart from the two straps you get with your FLARROW watch, we also have equipped our leather straps with a butterfly clasp. A butterfly clasp gives the leather strap and the watch an elegant finish and allows for quick and easy opening and closing of the buckle. Unlike the traditional buckle that you normally get with a leather strap is that you only need to set the desired length of the strap once and you are done. Open the buckle, slid your watch around your wrist and close the buckle again. It does not get much easier than this.
